Aloha! I am a Partner & Programmer at Bare Feet Studios, Secret Cameraman at Beach Walks with Rox, and newbie fine art photographer & artist, living a great life and working joyfully in the paradise that is Kailua, Hawaii, on the windward side of the island of Oahu.
I’m delighted to announce that over the weekend, we (with much help and support from Roxanne) launched my Etsy Shop to display photographs from 4 of my current Photographic Series:
ʻAwapuhi (Ginger)
Kāwele (Towels)
Mea (Objects)
Holoholo (Cruising)
Currently only about 1/3 of the photos have been uploaded. I’m uploading a few more each day.
I’ll also be launching a Facebook Fan Page and will be adding a Portfolio and Gallery section to my site here. Lots of work still to do…
I hope you’ll drop by my shop on Etsy, take a look around, and let me know what you think!
A few weeks ago I submitted several of my photographs to my very first Juried Photography Exhibition. I’m thrilled to announce that one of my abstract photographs, “Abstract 8167“, was accepted!
From the exhibition description: The Second Annual Survey Exhibition Sponsored by Pacific New Media. This juried exhibition is open to all artists using photographic processes: traditional silver or color prints, digital imaging, alternative processes and mixed media explorations. Contemporary Photography in Hawaii 2010 is meant to offer artists that use photographic processes a venue for exhibiting work and to provide a snapshot of the “state of the art” of photography in Hawaii.
Hawaii residents, amateurs and professionals, are welcome to submit images. Works must show evidence of a photographic process in their creation.
The photographs I submitted for the Contemporary Photography in Hawaii 2010 exhibition were created completely in camera. I don’t even own Photoshop. Yet! Additionally, the 16 x 20 inch photographs are created by a state of the art process that infuses dyes directly into the surface of specially coated aluminum sheets. Because the image is infused into the aluminum surface and not simply printed on it, the prints are archival without requiring frames or glass; ultra-hard and scratch-resistant; completely waterproof and weatherproof; can be cleaned with any commercial glass cleaner; and radiate a brilliant and luminescent quality that cannot be achieved with high quality paper or traditional printing techniques.
The painterly abstracts where created by experimenting with Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) and by manually adjusting aperture, focus, and shutter speed. I imported them directly from the camera into Apple’s Aperture where only lens dust specs were removed. No color corrections, filters, or enhancements of any kind were applied.
Here is a short “unboxing” video that Roxanne shot when the photographs arrived from the printer. The first photograph is from my “Negatives” series that I haven’t yet posted.

Rox’s dad, Bill Benton, lost his 15 year battle with 5 different cancers last night. He quietly and peacefully slipped away in his Florida home with his wonderful wife, Blanche, and two of his four daughters, Barbara and Judy, by his side. I feel honored to have gotten to know him over the past 8 [...]
It’s just after 11:30pm here on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, and I’m tapping out this blog post on my iPhone, in the dark, while pearched on the roof of our house. The “trades” (that’s what we here on the islans lovingly refer to the Trade Winds that blow in off the Pacific ocean) have [...]
Back to work today after taking the past two weeks “off,” which basically meant I didn’t check email and now have to deal wtih over 400 real messages in my Inbox. Completely overwhelmed with everything in my To Do lists and on my whiteboard that didn’t get done during the “break.” Trying to remind myself [...]
First full day in Park City and we went rock climbing, out to dinner, and then to see Ocean’s 13. The rock climbing was the most fun and you’ll have to watch to find out why.
Travel day from Santa Fe to Albuquerque to Phoenix to Salt Lake City to Park City. Planes were late but I got where I was supposed to go and my buddy Lana was there to pick me up. Good day!
I just finished IM’ing (Instant Messaging) with someone that I’ve only recently met via Twitter. He recently received an invitation to blog for one of the Presidential campaigns and had some questions that he thought I might be able to answer. An hour later and he was so inspired that he decided to go for [...]
Where to star? Where to start? So much going on: Old and new clients calling and emailing us for work. I should have been on a plane back to Hawaii early this morning but have extended my stay in Santa Fe, NM for 3 more weeks until July 10th. Long time to be away from [...]
We are working with the Maui Visitors Bureau (http://www.visitmaui.com) to help promote Maui's innovative and sustainable practices. From the eco-friendly sailing canoe adventures on the beach, all the way to the top of the mountains where Maui Cattle Company herds roam and feed only on the grasses of the Maui Mountains. Maui is leading the way in it's use of New Media and Social Networks in order to tell the world why Maui is so unique in it's approach to conservation and preservation of Hawaii's native culture and Aina (land).
There's always lots of lizards and geckos scurrying about outside the house here in Hawaii. But this little guy "owns" the shower and chases off any intruders.
On this day, he was feeling especially brave and let me get within a few inches but my camera.
Hipstamatic is an amazing iPhone app that I used to take these photos.
http://hipstamaticapp.com/
From their website:
"The Hipstamatic for iPhone is an application that brings back the look, feel, unpredictable beauty, and fun of plastic toy cameras from the past."
I just saw the term "freelensing" tonight for the first time. Too dark to head outside so could only experiment in the house. Looking forward to trying this outside and at the beach!
A mixture of photographs from several flights between Honolulu overnight to Palm Beach, Florida. Roxanne works from HNL to SFO; stretches in SFO; sleeps on the way to Charlotte; and reads and catches a nap on the last leg to Palm Beach.
Beauty is everywhere. In the patterns of trees, water, stone, and concrete. Just stop. Close your eyes. Breathe... Now open your eyes and take a fresh look at those everyday things that surround you.
Taken in Palm Beach during our recent trip to Florida in January, 2010.

This entire set was my first attempt at abstract photography and ICM (intentional camera movement).
First one happened by accident but then I ran around the house for about 45 minutes shooting over 500 photographs while trying different types of camera settings and different ways of moving the camera.
With most of these I used the camera as if it were a paintbrush. That's especially true of the spiky yellow light ones in the center of the set.
All photographys in this Gallery were created entirely in-camera. No Photoshop, digital manipulation, or post-processing of any kind was used in the creation of these photographs.
Rox, Lexi, and I took a quick walk at Kalama Beach Park last Saturday evening right after sunset. I grabbed the camera on the way out the door and these are my favorite shots from the walk.
Rox and I spent a few days with my family in Kansas City over the Thanksgiving weekend. I actually didn't take a lot of pics except one afternoon when my sister, Danielle (herself a budding photographer) asked me to shoot a few of her and her family at a nearby park. I don't consider myself a photographer but we got a few fun pics and had fun playing in the sunny but brisk November weather.
This Social Media Club Hawaii event centered around Flickr. How, Why, and how best to use it for your personal, professional, and event photographs.
Somewhat ironic that I, as a complete newbie to photography, was the "official photographer" for this event...
This is the first public event I've shot with our new Canon T1i. I've never used a SLR camera before, only the little point-n-click pocket cameras. I have a LOT to learn about how to capture moving people at events while using the Manual setting and not using flash...
Also, if you see someone in a photo who is not tagged, please do so.
@RoxanneDarling and I did a short photo shoot with @VuBui on Lanikai beach while he was on Oahu at the end of September, 2009.
We just got a Canon T1i, my first real camera, a few weeks before he arrived and these are some of the first pics I took with the camera "behind the scenes" as he shot Rox.
Still trying to figure out how exposure, F-stops, film speed, and shutter speed work together as you can tell from some of the photos.
All photos are straight from the camera. I don't touch them in iPhoto or Photoshop.
NOTE: Most of our photos are posted on Roxanne's USS Nimitz Set
Roxanne Darling (@roxannedarling on Twitter), I, and 14 other "Distinguished Visitors (DVs) from Hawaii had the priviledge and honor of spending almost 24 hours aboard the US Navy aircraft carrier, USS Nimitz as she ran training operations off the southern coast of the Big Island, Hawaii.
NOTE: New MLS listing: bit.ly/myloft
If you refer someone to me that ends up buying my loft, and you can prove that you referred that person, I'll pay you $1,000.00!
I met Andrew "Pav" Pavitt last year at SxSW in Vegas. He was traveling across the US (he's Aussie) and was going to be staying in a hostel in Albuquerque for 3-4 days.
I told him that he should instead stay in Santa Fe (60 miles North) and that I had an empty Loft just sitting there wanting someone to visit.
I then found out he is an excellent architectural photographer. He was kind enough to take these photos of my Loft in Sanfa Fe.
Now I'm putting it up for sale. Know anyone that wants to live in a beautiful, completely unique Loft i Santa Fe, New Mexico? If so, email me at shane@shanerobinson.comPS: This PhotoSet originated and is managed directly from an Album in my iPhoto. When I add photos to this Album in iPhoto, they are automatically added to this set on Flickr. Very slick!
After several weeks of thinking about how to work in a new Mac Pro and MacBook Air into my already messy office, I decided this morning at 5:30am that I've finally had it and that it was time to just do it. If all goes well, two days from now I'll have a kick-ass new office layout.
Take a photo of yourself, every day, for 365 days. Join the 365Days pool. Tag it with "365Days" and add it to the pool.
Now just try to remember to take a new pic every single day.
Lan & Bonny from Noodlescar (http://www.noodlescar.com) visited Hawaii for the first time and crashed with us for a couple of days.
It was already late when we picked them up at the airport but they were ready to experience Hawaii so we stopped by Dr Trey's studio and found he, Kekai and Alan hanging out, talking story and having a few beers.
I bought, designed and built a loft at The Lofts (http://www.thelofts.com) in Santa Fe in 2001. It's our Santa Fe base of operations and where we live and work and meet clients several times a year.
In April I flew from Santa Fe to Dublin, Ireland to visit, Beth, my ex-wife. She had been living there for 3 years and was preparing to move back to the States so I went to visit before she did. We also went to London for 3 days and I completely fell in love with London.
